I started my involvement in hockey when my oldest son played his first year of U7 in 2017 , since then I have managed every year . This was not my first taste of hockey as I played from U11-U15 out of Evansburg Co-Ed and then switched to female hockey out of Onoway for my U18 years .
I have two boys that play hockey , one defence and one goalie . I have a son that plays to get better , to grow his skill and advance and my other son plays to enjoy the game and be with friends because of these two very different perspectives I feel it allows to relate to most all players . Not everyone is here to be on the best team , some are here for the love of the game and to play with friends. Both reasons should be accepted and encouraged .
My goal for every player in our association is that they finish the year happy with their growth as a player/goalie and excited to come back the next year to do it again
I am in my 21rst year of being involved in Minor Hockey. I have coached in all 21 of these years. This season is different ,first time in 20 years I wont be coaching players directly, I will be coaching the coaches to develop the players properly. I started coaching my buddies kid then my real journey began as I coached my 3 boys on all their teams. I also have kept busy through off season coaching development/ conditioning camps and checking clinics. During the 20years I also spent 9 years on a Minor hockey board where I was VP of operations and league rep for most that time.
Giving back has always been important to my wife and I. Dont know how it started or why? Just seems to be the right thing and we are now seeing it come full circle as our boys are now coaching multiple sports and helping with community functions outside of sports. Coaching is a passion of mine, I've had the opportunity to coach some great kids and meet some great people in Baseball, basketball, soccer and hockey. I don't plan on quitting anytime soon.
Coach for life not a season!
I have been involved in hockey all my life. I played hockey and officiated hockey when I was young. When I moved to Stony Plain 15 years ago, I re-introduced myself to minor hockey as an official with the SPMHA. After having kids, I transitioned to coaching. I have been lucky enough to coach on several teams in the SPMHA over the last 7 years.
I have dedicated the majority of my life to working with kids. Both professionally and in my personal life as a coach and mentor. I enjoy spending my time outside. Some hobbies that I enjoy are hunting, fishing, water sports, and golfing.
This is my sixth year on the board, I was Coach Director for the last 4 years. I have head coached both my children since Atom (U11). I now coach a U18 team I don't have a child on, and it's super rewarding to give back. Before I had kids I volunteered with Hockey Alberta. Hockey is my passion, it's a great way to make winter fly by!
My dad was always involved when I was a kid and even at 80 he still works with different groups. That left a lasting impression on me. I volunteer to help make things better in my community, giving back truly is rewarding and the good outweighs the bad (for the most part). I figure if you want to make a difference than step-up, sitting on the sidelines complaining is not helpful. Showing my kids that you can make a difference by helping will hopefully encourage them to be leaders as well.
I wanted to move to the Referee-In-Chief position as it needed some structure. We have done a lot of work so far, developing them through supervisions, mentorships and on-ice shadows. We definitely need more senior officials, that is my biggest challenge. However we have a great group of referee's at all levels who do an excellent job, and I'm super proud of everyone.
I have been part of the Stony Plain Minor Hockey Association since 2017, when my son began his hockey journey in the U7 division. Over the past nine seasons, I’ve proudly served as either a head coach or assistant coach across various age groups, and I’m excited to be stepping into my first year as a board member, taking on the role of Director for the U9 division.
Hockey has been a constant in my life since the age of four. My very first season was played right here in Stony Plain, with the remainder of my minor hockey years spent in Devon. Remarkably, 45 years later, I still lace up my skates and play oldtimers hockey alongside many of the same friends I met through minor hockey.
I’m a strong believer in the lifelong value of team sports. The friendships, problem-solving, listening, communication, respect, resilience, and teamwork that are developed on the ice stay with players well beyond their youth. Hockey has positively influenced every stage of my life, and I hope to help create the same enriching experience for every player who comes through SPMHA.
I have been with Stony Plain Minor hockey since my youngest started in U9. After the first 4 seasons of being an Assistant Coach I decided to take on the Head Coach role for the past two seasons and now stepping into a Director role for the first time. I really enjoy working with the kids and getting to know the families.
Growing up, sports played a huge part of my life, from soccer, skiing/snowboarding, hockey, golf etc. all have helped shape me into who I am today. I believe that at their core they teach us discipline, patience, accountability.
I’ve been a part of the Stony Plain Minor Hockey community for 6 years, when my oldest was in U7!
This is my third year as the apparel coordinator, I was nominated by a close friend at the AGM and not told about it until months later.
I’ve been voted best hockey road trip snack packer by multiple kids
