Coach Applications are open and previous experience is not required. Applications are open to all interested individuals and all potential coaches are encouraged to apply. Coaches who are applying to be Head Coach with SPMHA must provide a sample practice plan at coach interviews.

Head Coaches, please send an email to registration@spmha.net to arrange your access for the season and obtain the necessary information for the season ahead.

Head Coach interviews will be held on the following dates. Interview time slot selection opens on August 15th.

  • U7 - August 19th (from 5-8 PM)
  • U9 - August 20th (from 5-8 PM)
  • U11 - August 21st (from 5-8 PM)
  • U13 - August 22nd (from 5-8 PM)
  • U15 - August 27th (from 5-8 PM)
  • U18 - August 28th (from 5-8 PM)

HEAD COACH

QUALIFICATIONS 
  • Strong interest and commitment to child/athlete development. Ability to work with fellow coaching personnel.
  • Ability to communicate on and off-ice requirements to players and parents
  • Available to meet time requirements.
  • Certified at the level indicated by Hockey Canada and SPMHA.
RESPONSIBILITIES 
  • Serve as the official spokesperson on behalf of the team. Coordinate the delegation of responsibilities to the assistant coach
  • Plan on-ice activities in consultation with the assistant coach Plan, implement, and control pre-game preparation and communication with the team. 
  • Design the practice plans in consultation with the assistant coach. 
  • Coach the team in games and practices. 
  • Establish rules for the team and oversee the supervision of the players.
  • Outline of practice plans and game strategy and recommendations on how the program can be improved. 
  • Report to the association through the Association Coach Development Director or Designate. 
TIME COMMITMENT 
  • Weekly practices and/or games; usually approximately 2-5 hours in duration 
  • Weekly game/practice preparation; usually 1-2 hours in duration Tournaments (home and away) 
  • Attend meetings as required by the Association at the start of the season.
  • Check emails and answer any inquiries in a timely fashion, approximately 2 hours a week.

ASSISTANT COACH

QUALIFICATIONS 
  • Strong interest and commitment to child/athlete development.
  • Ability to work with fellow coaching personnel.
  • Ability to communicate on and off-ice requirements to players and parents as required. 
  • Available to meet time requirements.
  • Certified at the level indicated by Hockey Canada and SPMHA.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assist with planning, organizing, and conducting practices.
  • Assist with pre-game preparation.
  • Assist with the operation of the team during the games.
  • Assist with the supervision of players off and on the ice.
  • Assist with the formulation of the game plan. Report to the head coach.
TIME COMMITMENT
  • Weekly practices and/or games; approximately 2-5 hours in duration.
  • Weekly game/practice preparation; usually 1-2 hours in duration.
  • Tournaments (home and away).
  • Attend team/association meetings as required. 


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS 

1. Criminal Record/Vulnerable Sector Check 

All CRC/VSC must be obtained in person from the RCMP. To waive the processing fee, SPMHA must verify your volunteer commitment. Please contact the Coach Director or registration coordinator for a volunteer letter. 

CRC/VSC are only accepted by email. Please take a picture or scan your completed document and EMAIL it to your team manager AND the association Admin, registration@spmha.net. If you do not submit a valid CRC/VSC or complete the required qualifications, before November 10th your name will be removed from the roster. 


2. Respect in Sport – Activity Leader Certificate

The Respect in Sport Activity Leader/Coach Program educates coaches and activity leaders to recognize, understand, and respond to issues of bullying, abuse, harassment, and discrimination. It may be the single most important training leaders receive to assist in creating a safe, healthy, and respectful environment for all participants. This is a minimum requirement for all coaches.
This course expires every four years. If you are unsure when your course expires, please look up your certificate in your Hockey Canada Account.
